Mayumi Ozaki going from a dynamic midcarder to the queen of the street fight, allowed her to transform into one of the legendary stars of Japanese women’s wrestling.
Ozaki debuted in a tag match in August, 1986. In her career, she held the WWWA tag titles with Dynamite Kansai from April 11, 1993 to December 6, 1993 (both winning from and losing to Manami Toyota and Toshiyo Yamada of All Japan Women's Pro-Wrestling (AJW). She also held the UWA Junior and JWP Junior titles between 1988 and 1991, and teamed with Cuty Suzuki and Hikari Fukuoka to win the JWP Tag Titles a number of times between 1992 and 1995. Most recently, she held the AAAW Tag title with Aja Kong, beating GAEA's Sugar Sato and Chikayo Nagashima on August 23, 1998 in Tokyo.
In her early years, Ozaki was a natural; her athleticism and looks elevated her to a good spot. She excelled in tag matches and in the type of intense battles that joshi puroresu was built on. In JWP, Ozaki was never the top star, but was always featured strongly. Her tag team with Cuty Suzuki was prominently featured as an idol team and Hikari Fukuoka essentially inherited Suzuki’s spot. When the interpromotional supershows came, Ozaki had numerous great matches and really elevated her stock. While she might have blown some spots, she was intense and believable during this time period. However, it was through her partnership and rivalry with JWP top star Dynamite Kansai that truly established her greatness. She proved to have a penchant for violence and really understood the subtleties of a top-notch heel.
When Ozaki fully embraced her “pure wild” character, she was able to take her game to another level. She earned a reputation for having great street fight matches, which allowed her to rely more on her strengths and weed out her weaknesses. It marked a transformation for joshi puroresu, which increasingly relied on blood and gimmickry to stay exciting. Ozaki established herself as the headmistress of her Oz Academy stable, playing with elements of S&M and dominatrix culture that gave her character an edge. A chain-wielding, blood-letting queen bitch, Mayumi Ozaki was able to surround herself with young talent that she gave the rub and let them do the heavy lifting. Through her transformation, all the storytelling elements that Ozaki excelled at became the foundation of her style.
She was arguably better at thirty-six then she was at twenty-six and she is still going past forty-six. Mayumi Ozaki is right up there with Mick Foley, Atsushi Onita and Terry Funk in her ability to work a wild brawl, although she may not be held in same high esteem.
