For a stretch in the 1980s, you'd be hard pressed to find a better heel than Dump Matsumoto. A rough worker in her formative years, Kaoru Matsumoto transformed herself physically and her in-ring work in 1984 and never looked back. The addition of colorful and crazy hair, war paint, swastikas and an arsenal of weapons made her the ideal leader of her Gokuaku Domei stable. Dump's army included some good heels who were better workers than her including Bull Nakano and Crane Yu. Furthmore, she was the perfect antogonist to the super-idol tag team, the Crush Gals. The schoolgirls came to see their heroines, Chigusa Nagayo and Lioness Asuka, who were bloodied and battered by Dump and her cronies in white-hot, dramatic action. This approach, while wildly different from the Beauty Pair days, brought AJW back to primetime network television, brought fans to arenas in droves and sold tons of merchandise.
Dump's retirement coincided with that hot period ending. Unlike her partners and opponents, she did not return to the ring. At least not immediately and not during the third boom of the early 1990s. She enjoyed her celebrity from her heyday, hosting a talk show, doing parts in movies and even lending her image to a video game. In 2005, she came back to Chigusa Nagayo's GAEA company, but other than that and few other appearances, she did not become a regular. While she could still do her act, it was purely a nostalgia feature. Several years later, she was diagnosed with a terminal illness. Dump Matsumoto is one of the greatest characters that joshi puroresu has ever seen and is fondly remembered by the generation that grew up shrieking as she tried to kill their idols.
